Intermediate Roundup

Things began to settle down across the Intermediate league this week, with all four titles won and those games in hand almost caught up we saw fewer games this weekend, but still plenty of action around the grounds.

Crumlin Star celebrated their hat trick of Premier Division titles in style as they saw off Islandmagee with relative ease, securing a 4-1 win at the Cricky. Rock bottom Downpatrick fell to another heavy defeat this weekend, losing out 6-0 to a Rathfriland side showing some excellent form at this late stage of the season, with just one defeat in their last eight games.

East Belfast this week moved into second place and on Saturday travelled to Crumlin Star where they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ciaran Caldwell’s side, while 3rd placed Immaculata fell to a 1-0 home defeat against Ballynahinch Olympic.

The midweek games saw the NAFL season come to a close, and none of the results saw any movement in the final table. Champions Crumlin Star were given a guard of honour by visitors Crumlin United, and the hosts ran out 2-0 winners. Ballynahinch put a seal on an excellent first season in the top flight, with a fine 6-0 win away to Derriaghy CC.

Elsewhere, basement pair Downpatrick and Albert Foundry met at Rosconnor and the visitors secured a 3-1 win to finish off a poor season with a victory. Shankill United and Rathfriland met at the Hammer, with the two sides managed by members of Crusaders’ victorious 2009 Irish Cup Final side, Gareth McKeown & Aaron Black respectively. The sides fought out an entertaining 2-2 draw that rounded off encouraging seasons for the two clubs.

In the BPIL, Bangor continued their superb league record with a 4-2 home win over Newtowne on the day they were presented with the Intermediate League crown. St James Swifts notched their 20th win of the league season as they welcomed Ballymoney United to Celtic Park, winning an entertaining game 5-3.

At the bottom of the table, Cookstown RBL picked the best possible time to jump off the foot, as they triumphed 3-1 away at Wakehurst. This, along with Desertmartin falling to a 3-1 defeat at home to Chimney Corner, meant RBL moved two points above their rivals.

Elsewhere, Coagh United travelled to Mossley Park where they triumphed 4-1 over hosts Ballynure OB, and Cookstown Youth secured a hard-fought 3-2 win at home to Donegal Celtic.

In midweek Chimney Corner brought their season to a close with an excellent 5-2 home win over Newtowne, while Brantwood and Wakehurst met at the Ballymena Showgrounds where the visitors ran out 1-0 winners.

On to Mid Ulster, where Banbridge Rangers strengthened their grip on second spot thanks to a 2-1 win at home to Ballymacash Rangers. The only other side who can clinch second spot, Crewe United, handed the initiative back to Rangers by virtue of a 1-0 defeat away at Fivemiletown United. Valley Rangers were the big winners of the day as they romped to a 12-1 win at home to lowly AFC Silverwood.

Fivemiletown United were back in action on Tuesday night and again picked up an excellent win, seeing off hosts Richhill AFC 6-2, while Valley Rangers got back to winning ways thanks to a 2-1 win away to Tandragee Rovers.
