It feels like an age since our last set of League of Ireland predictions due to the first round of the FAI Cup taking place over last weekend – but we’re back today with a full set of fixtures to try and work out the scores for.
We’re entering the home straight of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division and currently Dundalk are in the driving seat as they sit seven points ahead of Shamrock Rovers and they have played a game less than their nearest challengers. With 3rd placed Derry City sitting a further six points behind Rovers, it would be fair to say that at this stage it’s at best a two-horse race for the title.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the table U.C.D. currently occupy bottom spot and our six points behind Finn Harps but with a game in hand and crucially the two sides will meet again before the end of the season. Sitting slightly higher up the table but by no means out of the woods are Cork City and Waterford, they would appear to be relatively safe from the threat of automatic relegation but would need points on the board if they want to avoid the promotion/relegation play-off against a First Division side.
The full fixture list for this weekend is as follows, all games are tonight at 19:45 unless otherwise stated:-
Bohemians v U.C.D.
Derry City v Shamrock Rovers
St. Patrick’s Athletic v Sligo Rovers
Waterford v Cork City
Dundalk v Finn Harps (tonight at 20:00)
