SSE Airtricity League Gameweek Two Roundup

Shamrock Rovers remain eight points clear of Bohemians at the top of the SSE Airtricity Premier Division after a 6-1 victory against Waterford on Monday night, with goals coming from Aaron Greene, Lee Grace, Graham Burke, Roberto Lopes, Jack Byrne and Dean Williams, with Michael O’Connor replying for The Blues.

Elsewhere Rovers closest challengers, the Bohs, had a less comprehensive victory against Sligo with Andre Wright scoring the winner with less than ten minutes on the clock, this leaves them still in the hunt for the league title but they face an uphill battle with just six games remaining.

The Bohs kick off the action this weekend as tonight they welcome Derry City to Dalymount Park, The Candystripes are in the midst of a disappointing season as they currently sit 6th in the table and have only three wins on the board but amazingly sit only four points off 3rd place and a spot in Europe next year so still have it all to play for.

Much like last weekend the current leaders, Shamrock Rovers, wrap up the action as they play at 19:30 on Sunday night and so their lead could be reduced to five points by the time they play if the Bohs were to win tonight. They travel to the current title holders, Dundalk, who by their own high standard have had a torrid season and currently sit a whopping 15 points off top spot and qualification for Europe is by no means a foregone conclusion at this stage.

The Lilywhites have fared better in Europe this season though as they defeated Moldovan champions, Sheriff Tiraspol, last night on penalties to move one game away from reaching the Europa League group stages.

Another interesting clash this weekend takes place at the Regional Sports Centre were Waterford play host to Sligo. Both sides have improved on their performances from last season to date and sit 4th and 5th in the table respectively and are pushing to beat Dundalk to that final European spot.
