Intermediate Roundup

Another absorbing week of Intermediate football, and this week saw one side take a massive step towards winning their league title, and with it the potential of a return to the top flight of Intermediate football.

In Mid Ulster, Dollingstown took a firm grip on Intermediate A this week, initially without even kicking a ball. Second place Banbridge Rangers fell to a 2-0 defeat away to Fivemiletown United on Saturday, a huge blow to their title hopes as it marked the final game in hand they had over the Dolly Birds.

Dollingstown then stretched their lead further on Tuesday night as they travelled to Windmill Stars in Armagh, and despite falling behind they went on to secure a comfortable 4-1 win. Dollingstown now require just 3 points from their remaining two games to seal the title and a shot at the promotion playoffs.

Crewe United remain in third place following this week’s results, on Tuesday night they travelled to Valley Rangers but fell to a 2-1 defeat which just about puts out their hopes of a title.

Meanwhile, in the BPIL Bangor remain on top of the division following two wins in a week against their nearest challengers.

Following on from their victory at St. James Swifts in midweek, they took to the road again as they took on their nearest challengers Glebe Rangers at the Riada Stadium. The Seasiders secured a 1-0 win which could prove massive in the title race. Despite the defeat Glebe bounced back on Tuesday night, easing to a 2-1 win at home to Cookstown RBL.

Jason Wilmont’s side still have two games in hand on the leaders, and wins in those games will lift them above Bangor in the table.

St.James got back to winning ways with a heavy 10-2 win at home to Ballynure, while Sofia Farmers miserable run continued with an 8-2 defeat at Dunloy. Bangor remain seven points clear of St.James, having played a game more, and five ahead of Glebe as we enter the home straight.

Onto the NAFL now, where East Belfast were knocked off top spot for the first time, and at such a crucial time of the season. Crumlin Star and Rathfriland have been in hot pursuit of the East Park men for the last number of weeks and the results this week saw both sides leapfrog East Belfast in the table.

On Thursday night the pair were in action with Crumlin picking up an impressive 2-1 win on the road at Immaculata, while Rathfriland were held 2-2 at home to 1st Bangor. This was followed up on Saturday by a pair of wins, Star easing to a 4-0 win at Drumaness Mills while Rathfriland got back to winning ways with a 2-0 home win over Derriaghy.

East Belfast suffered a 1-0 defeat to Immaculata on Saturday, their first defeat in six games, but it was an important one that allowed their rivals to overtake them in the table. Crumlin Star are now in command of the division, and need a maximum of ten points from their remaining five games to secure what would be back to back titles for the North Belfast men.

Rathfriland sit six points behind the Star having played the same number of games, while East Belfast are also six behind but having played three games more.

In the North West Magherafelt of course secured the title two weeks ago, leaving the battle for second place the last remaining issue to be solved.

Strabane remain in the box seat, despite a heavy 5-1 defeat away to Trojans this week. Ardstraw and Maiden City cranked up the pressure on them though, as both romped to 7-0 wins this week. Ardstraw at home to Ballymoney and Maiden City away to Dungiven.

Strabane sit on 33 points with one game left to play, Ardstraw are now on 28 points with a game in hand, while Maiden City are a further three behind with one additional game in hand.
