Intermediate Roundup

This weekend saw a weather-beaten set of fixtures across the Intermediate leagues, but as ever, the games that did go ahead didn’t fail to disappoint.

Immaculata extended their lead at the top of the NAFL thanks to an impressive 3-0 home win over Islandmagee at Grosvenor. This, allied with Shankill United’s 2-2 draw at home to Drumaness Mills allowed the Mac to open up a five point lead over their rivals, with East Belfast tucked behind in third spot but with four games in hand.

Rathfriland meanwhile picked up their second win on the bounce with a fine 4-1 win over Albert Foundry at Paisley Park. Marty Verner (2), Jack Graham and James Costello netting for Aaron Black’s men to lift them up to 7th place. In the final game of the day, Derriaghy CC notched up a 4-2 home win over bottom side Downpatrick. This result opened up a seven point gap between Mark Miskimmin’s side and their visitors at the foot of the table.

In Mid Ulster, Hanover remain on top of the division and indeed extended their lead over Moneyslane to eight points this week. They scored an important 2-1 home win over Valley Rangers, Regan McIlveen with a double to secure the three points. Moneyslane could only draw 1-1 at home to Bourneview Mill, Chris Brown netting for the home side before Sam Haugh nicked a last-minute equaliser for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Crewe United were back in league action after seven weeks of cup games and they got straight back to winning ways, seeing off Tandragee Rovers 5-1. Eamonn McCarthy’s men netting through Dan Smith (2), Mark Burns (2) & Dale Monroe. Crewe now sit in 4th spot, ten points behind Hanover but with five games in hand.

Banbridge Rangers remain in 3rd spot after they battled to a 0-0 draw with Fivemiletown Utd at Cheney Park. AFC Richhill kept up their good form with a 5-0 win away at St Mary’s. Jason Dickson (2), Gareth Rees, Davy Ross and an OG made it a good day for Marty Rice’s men.

In the Ballymena League, only one game beat the weather, and that was at the Riada were league leaders and reigning champions Glebe Rangers eased to a 4-1 win over Wakehurst. Francis, Kennoway, Reis and McWhirter netting the goals that see the Ballymoney men end the year 18 points ahead of Bangor, albeit having played eight games more than their rivals. Bangor and fellow title chasers St James will have to squeeze 20 league games into the second half of the season, however along with the divisional cup competitions making for a hectic second half of the season for the chasing pack.
