A much quieter week this week. Only six games played as the four Intermediate leagues wind down for the season with the titles all handed out.
There were still 27 goals scored in those games, with most of them coming in Mid Ulster. Crewe United keep up their chase for second spot with a fine 6-0 win at home to Laurelvale. In a very tight first half, the sides turned around with the hosts 1-0 up. The second goal didn’t come till after the hour mark, but that signalled an avalanche with another four goals put past the visiting keeper before the final whistle.
Elsewhere, Fivemiletown United kept up their recent fine form with a 3-1 win away at Moneyslane. Chris McDowell, Davy Fulton and Ivan Carson netting the goals to make it five wins on the trot for the Valley men as the season comes to an end. It was goals galore at Bignian Park where Valley Rangers hosted Ballymacash Rangers. In a crazy start to the game, the visiting Rangers found themselves 4-0 up within the first 15 minutes with goals from Adams, Inacio (2) & McNeice, but the hosts refused to lie down, fighting back with goals from Graham, Johnston & Patterson, but the equalizer didn’t come and the visitors took full points.
On to the Ballymena league now, and Champions Bangor completed their league campaign with an unbelievable record of 27 wins and one draw from their 28 games, scoring 115 goals along the way. Their final league game before promotion came at Dromore Park where they defeated hosts, bottom side Desertmartin 4-3 thanks to goals from Michael Halliday (3) and a Scott McArthur penalty. Bangor fulfil their final game of the season on Friday night as they take on St James Swifts in the McReynolds Cup Final at Allen Park.
St James meanwhile, completed their league campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 home win over Cookstown Youth. The visitors took the lead through Mark Megarry, but the Swifts hit back to secure the points thanks to goals from Terry McGrath & Aaron Smyth.
The final game of the weekend saw Newtowne host Brantwood at Scroggy Road in their final league game of the season The sides, who are both multiple winners of the Intermediate division, fought out a 0-0 draw which cemented their positions of seventh and fifth respectively. The same two sides now meet on Saturday in the final of the Crawford Cup, again at Allen Park. This game could prove to be Newtowne’s final game in the BPIL as they are set to transfer to the NI Intermediate league in the summer.
