SSE Airtricity League Gameweek Two Roundup

Dundalk are now the champions-elect in the Premier Division as they beat defending champions Cork City 1-0 in Turner’s Cross last Friday night. Chris Shiels scored the game’s only goal after only three minutes. That was a huge win for Stephen Kenny’s side as they are now nine points clear and have a game in hand over their great rivals. It will be their fourth league title in the last five seasons. Their game on hand is on Tuesday night when they will welcome Derry City to Oriel Park.

It has been a tough week on the pitch for Derry. Last Sunday they beat Cobh Ramblers 3-1 to win the EA Sports Cup. Then on Wednesday, they were in action against Bohemian FC in the quarter-final of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup. They were knocked out as Bohs won 3-1. Dinny Corcoran scored two for Bohs with Dan Casey getting their first. Alistair Roy scored for Derry. On Saturday it was back to league action and they welcomed Shamrock Rovers to the Brandywell and were beaten 1-0. Daniel Carr with the game’s only goal. Shamrock are solidifying their grip on third place.

Although they are only two points ahead of Waterford FC who beat Sligo Rovers 1-0 in the Regional Sports Centre. Estonian international Sander Puri with the goal as Rovers continue to be haunted by the curse of the former player. Last week it was Brendan Clarke who scored the winner for St. Patrick’s Athletic and this week Puri who played for the Bit O’Red in 2015.

Bohs are on a roll as they followed up their win in Derry by beating St. Pat’s in the league. They won 3-1 in Richmond Park. Ali Reghba scored the first and the third with Robbie McCourt getting the second.  Achille Campion scored for Pat’s. Bray Wanderers were effectively relegated as they were beaten 2-0 by second from bottom Limerick in the Carlisle Grounds. Barry Maguire and Connor Ellis with the goals.

Limerick will now go into the promotion/relegation playoffs and they will find out in three weeks who they will face. The First Division came to a conclusion over the weekend. Champions UCD finished their campaign by drawing 2-2 against Longford Town in the City Calling Stadium. Dean Dillon scored both goals for the Town with Daire O’Connor and Yousef Mahdy replying for the students. Finn Harps who finished second beat Cabinteely 7-1 in Finn Park. Their goals coming from Paddy McCourt, Jesse Devers, Aidan Friel, Nathan Boyle, Jakup Borg and Mikey Place who scored two. Kieran ‘Marty’ Waters got a consolation for Cabinteely.

Goals from James English, Greg Moorhouse and Reece McEnteer gave Shelbourne a 3-0 win over Galway United in Tolka Park. Sean Brennan and Luke Gallagher were the scorers for Drogheda United as they beat Cobh Ramblers 2-0 in St. Colman’s Park. The remaining game saw second from bottom Wexford FC beat Athlone Town 2-0 in Ferrycarrig. Aaron Dobbs and Dean Walsh got their goals. So now Drogheda United will take on Shelbourne in a two-legged affair. The winners of that will face Finn Harps with the winners of that tie going on to play Limerick.
