Teenage Irish striker makes Premier League debut

Irish underage striker Tom Cannon made his Premier League debut for Everton in the weekend’s 3-0 defeat away to Bournemouth.

With 15 minutes left, Cannon was substituted in for Dwight McNeil on a day when his pride was wounded by a miserable afternoon for his team.

Cannon, who was born in Liverpool, is eligible to represent Ireland through his grandmother and has done so at the U19 and U20 levels.

Cannon has now made his Premier League debut against Bournemouth after making his senior debut against them in the Carabao Cup midweek. He scored twice in Everton U21s’ victory over Paris Saint-Germain as a follow-up to his performance from midweek.

A second three-goal loss to Bournemouth in a week adds pressure to Frank Lampard, and Cannon’s sense of personal pride is eroded by another appalling performance and result for Everton.

The Bournemouth goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, who will represent England at the World Cup, contributed to the team’s first goal when he spilled a Dominic Solanke shot into Marcus Tavernier’s path for an easy goal.

Prior to Jadon Anthony, who came on as a substitute in the second half, sealing the victory, Kieffer Moore added a second in the 25th minute.

With interim manager Gary O’Neil yet to receive a permanent contract, Bournemouth entered the game on a run of four straight league losses. Against the Toffees, however, they took another step in the right direction and secured their spot in the Premier League.

Prior to the trip to the south coast, Everton had only scored 11 goals in 14 Premier League games. They were unable to increase their goal total against Bournemouth and now have just 14 points heading into the World Cup break.

For Bournemouth, Irish goalkeeper Mark Travers started the match, and Seamus Coleman came on as a first-half substitute for Vitaly Mykolenko, who was injured, and played an hour at left back.
